I lived for many years in the city & loved the live theatre, live music, excellent (non-chain) restarurants, trader joes etc BUT felt I needed to get a house as I was gettting older. In the city I could only afford a small rental apt with no room for a dining table, bad heat and no AC in the summer. For $100 more, I now have a real house with dining table & dishwasher, laundry, guest rooms & guest bathrooms. My upper deck looks out on a fruit orchard & mountains. I have grapes and blackberries and fresh eggs BUT I am having a jones for civilization ! Help ! is there any way to have the best of both these worlds ?

How far are you from the city? How far from a university? Even some small colleges have great arts departments. Also, there are probably other people like you in your area. Check to see what they are doing - community theater, for example, can be just as professional as city theater.

If all else fails, travel. Spend one week out of each quarter in the city. Plan it ahead of time to take in theater, opera, museums, restaurants, etc. Even better, you can choose a different city each time, instead of living in the same tiresome city all the time. ;-)
