I only ask because it looks like there used to be a booster behind the master cylinder, and you really have to press hard on the pedal to slow down or stay stopped on a hill. I just replaced the pads, shoes, and the adjuster on the drivers side drum

If it had one,and they changed over to manual brakes, they would have needed to get a different pushrod for the pedal,as the original pushrod was attached to the booster.Vehicles used to come 3 ways....4 wheel drum brakes w/o power assist, front disc w/power assist, and front disc w/o power assist. There should be a large hose fitting on the intake for the vacuum feed to the old booster if there was one.I would get a rebuilt booster/master cyl combo and the proper vacuum hose (its special as not to collapse) and hook it back up.We get so used to power assist nowadays, when we drive a vehicle without it,we NOTICE IT! lol

Check your Vacuum Booster.... a really stiff/hard brake pedal
effort ususaly indicates your not getting any assist from your
brake booster. Also make sure that your Shoes in the back are
adjusted properly and that there is no air in your hydraulic system. It would not hurt to bleed the entire system. But if you
have a good Pedal, Halfway up from the floor or more then you
are experiencing Booster Troubles. Make sure that you have direct Manifold Vacuum from you intake to the booster and that the hose is good.... This should get you guided in the right direction.... good luck

All 1971-79 models are equipped with power front disc brakes. This single piston caliper is a sliding type. No brake adjustment is necessary once the brake pads have been seated against the rotor.

As an option, it could have originally. Sounds like it needs power assist again. Search your local junkyards for a booster and related hardware and ease the charly horses in your leg.

They offered that truck both ways. You can add a booster, but you will have to change the master cylinder, as well as possibly the proportioning valve.
