Columbus was not the first to discover America. But until history books are changed, school kids won't ever learn that. The entire story as kids learn it is is nothing like how things really happened according to the more advanced history books. Why can't we teach kids the truth in a simplified version based on their learning levels instead of filling their heads with lies and passing it off as fact?
That aside, I don't think we should celebrate Columbus Day because we are honoring someone who wiped out an entire group of people. It's no different when you really think about it than if you were to celebrate something like Cortez Day or Jim Jones Day.

Yeah that he didn't discover America because Native Americans were already here way before he was even born.
And that his little voyage was funded by Spanish funds.
But yet allot of Americans think they freakin own this place and hate when others try to come over here and live a better life
but yet Whites immigrated here too.

We know the story of all the holidays. It certainly is your option not to celebrate if you please. For some people particular holidays have very special meaning that they traditionally celebrate with family and friends. Although I don't celebrate them all, I think it is great that we have national holidays set aside for people to have a chance for enjoyment.

And why shouldn't we celebrate the discovery of the New World? It's not a matter of "knowing the story."
