Why don't you go to college like my brother, who makes $60 000/year now??? Maybe you are too stupid.

Honey, if you knew the dollar amount of merchandise that passes through the hands of drug addicts & other criminals, you would be ashamed of that measly little dollar amount of only $60,000! A good addict/thief/forgery/fraud "artist" takes in close to a million a week when things go smoothly. Even a crappy addict uses more than your brother makes, so who's the stupid one? Your brother is probably their next "victim". Most shoplifters boost & trade daily for their fix. Many ARE College graduates who choose NOT to work because they ENJOY stealing from others. It's all just one big sick game until you die or get caught. Grew up with it. Seen a lot. Done some. No longer participate in that world.

Part of it has to do with people's perceptions. A person can get out of jail and attempt to make an honest living but no one will hire them because of a past mistake. Eventually they get so fed up that they end up reverting back to their ways. No one will give them the chance.

Another could do with the economy. 20-30 years ago you could start up at a company at the bottom and work your way up and have a decent job. My stepfather started at the company where he worked sweeping floors and stuff like that. They paid for him to get training as an electrician and he makes over 50,000 a year. Very little jobs has that. You either have to get a college degree or technical training (which you pay for yourself). Well for some people the lure of selling drugs or anything for that quick buck is more appealing than working hard for the money.

That is just my two cents. I'm not a criminal. I have a college degree and I am having trouble finding a job. Just because you doesn't guarentee 60,000 a year. The economy and who is running what plays a big factor.

The main reason I became a criminal is short work week and good money. It only costs me about $60,000 a year for a decent lawyer to take care of the legalities.
I find mortgage fraud to be the most lucrative but there is good money in laundering too.
I was going to become a politician but lately I notice there is just a little too much scrutiny for my liking.

You're kidding...right? You figure that a lot of career criminals come out here to Yahoo! Answers looking to answer questions directed at them?
...........So do you make $60,000. a year too because you went to college.
In this day and age, $60 thousand isn't a whole lot of money. It's a living but you're not going to get rich on it.

It's nice to see someone who's proud of their brother.....there's better ways to brag about him though.

For most it is psychological. Every one is compulsive in some area. Some people are obsessed with things some else has chosen to be accepted as criminal behavior. There are college educated criminals; they are just privileged to either pay their way out of trouble or being associates of those in power to overlook their criminal acts. I don't believe there were any illiterate bums involved in the ENRON scandal.

For most criminals it becomes a way of life for them, they get use to living in the pattern of being in and out of jail..This is where the system fails them, or the person just dont want help.
