Jim Jones had his followers drink Kool aid laced with cyanide in a ritual mass suicide.
To drink the Kool aid means to follow someone without question, follow them blindly.
Although, it originally referred to the Merry Pranksters who followed Ken Kessy where the Kool Aid was laced with acid.
The flip side you'll hear a lot as well, "Don't drink the Kool-aid" meaning not to follow anyone you think is a bit kooky or whatever they tell you, don't believe it too strongly.

It is probably referring to the Jim Jones Massacre when a bunch of people committed suicide by drinking poisoned Koolaid, so I guess it would mean someone kills theirself politically by some action they did.

It refers to the Jamestown massacre in Gyanna back in the 80. A man named John Jones had people believed that he was a profit and if they killed themselves they would all go to heaven. "Drinking the koolaid" means that you believe whatever your affiliated party says whether you've researched it or not.
