with my 1971 chevy c10, if they changed the engine from a 350 to a 250,or 290 camaro engine would they have had to change the transmission too? I need to get a new speedometer cable and need to figure out what transmission is on there, since the cable plugs into the trany. thanks

The transmission has no bearing on the speedometer cable, as the same attachment is used on all General Motors transmissions in that era. So, if an outomatic, it will be the same for the t-200 through the 700r4. All manual trans are also the same cable attachment.

You could easily tell if it was changed to a 250, because that is an inline 6. Never heard of a 290. They had a 292 inline six in trucks.
The transmission from a V8 would not bolt up to an inline six because of the starter location.
As luck would have it though, none of this matters in solving your problem. If you buy the cable assembly(Housing and all) you may need to know the length of the tailhousing on the transmission. If you buy just the cable, it comes as a very long piece and you have to cut it to length and affix the speedometer end on it.

Transmission is seperately in the in the Gear box, so it is not changed.
Fix the speedometer cable tightly.

chevies have the same bolt pattern, so the trans would not need to get changed
