Surgery for sleep apnea is usually discouraged - it's very painful, and the success rate is rather low. Using a CPAP machine (which is covered by almost any insurance) is a better option in almost all cases.

If insurance is not available, there are excellent CPAPs at good prices from http://www.cpap.com - you do need a presecription. I use their Puritan-Bennett Goodknight 420C and love it - very quiet and lightweight.

You might look in at the Usenet group alt.support.sleep-disorder - lots of knowledgable people there.

My surgery cost $50 because I had health insurance. Don't know about health insurance in the bay area, seems like it would be like anywhere else. Be advised it is not a painless operation. Your uvula, tonsils, and skin flaps that line your throat are all removed. It makes it nearly impossible to swallow for about a week or so. It's worth it if it helps you to breath correctly at night. Good luck
