Tivo is great, I've had it for 3 years. Keep an eye on Sunday ad's. Last month I got an 80 hour Dual Tuner Tivo, for my dad, at Best Buy for only $30, after rebates. Wait for good rebates - We were willing to pay $100 for his gift, but luckily it was on sale. Tivo just came out with their Series 3 High Defenition Tivo's - those are $799. Not worth it to me. You'd be better off getting HD Cable DVR or DirectTV HD DVR for a monthly fee before spending $799... Good Luck.

TiVO is awesome!!! You can record two things at the same time. Or you can record one thing and watch something else on the other tuner (it's like 2 cables from your satellite or cable provider). And you can watch anything that you've recorded whenever you want, whether you're recording something or not. Also, you can save stuff onto it. Like you can buy a Pay Per View movie and save it and keep it on your TiVO until you choose to delete it. TiVO is just a big Hard Drive. And it's awesome!!! You can get a TiVO that holds up to 80 hours of recorded shows and movies. You can also get an HD TiVO... but if you do this... make sure you get the newest model... DirecTV sold me one 2 months ago that will be obsolete in a couple months! Stupid DirecTV. But... TiVO is AWESOME!!!

Also Tivo can connect with your computer and on Yahoo you can program it to record things from your computer along with pictures, home videos. It runs on Linux OS and is much more than what you get from the cable company. another nice thing is you can buy the Tivo usually with a healthy rebate and pay a one time fee which is expensive but you will never need to pay the monthly fee for updates ever for the life of the Tivo. I think it takes 2 years to get your money back vs paying month to month so after that it is bonus. I love my Tivo...

Well a Tivo is like the cadillac of the dvr service.
With tivo you can set it up to automatically record the shows you want, its called a season pass, you can set up wishlists for shows you may want to see, by title, actor, director, category and it will find them for you whenever they are on. It stores up to two weeks of tv data. You can record two programs at once and watch things saved in your now playing list. You can pause live tv for 30 minutes. It just makes television watching so much easier. You can fast forward thru commercials.
Now I have had a comcast dvr and it was like the pinto of dvrs.
Dvr thru directv and ur cable is just a basic crappy dvr, tv is like a dvr experience.I paid 30 bucks for my dual tuner box and 16 a month for the service. Its very much worth it. If you order thru tivo.com the box comes with everything you need to set it up and very easy to follow directions.

Look around for deals. You can get them for free.

Otherwise, go here for DirecTV Tivos:

Go here for standard TiVos:

The good quality ones run about $1700 or so.
