You need to express to him that it's not about him being a better boyfriend or making changes in his behavior, it's about you and how you feel and though you love him as a friend you can not commit your heart to this intense relationship since you are not sure what it is that you want right now and care too much about him to lose his friendship while you explore other aspects of your personality as well as other interests. It is not something he did or can undo...it's about you and your development and progress in becoming the person you want to be. If he gets upset and doesn't want to remain at least friends...then he never really loved or respected your relationship in the first place and you'll be better off without him in the long run. Best wishes to you.

In this case honesty is the best approach. Tell him you he's a great guy but you don't feel the same. So let him know that you will be happier if you guys remain as friends and that if he really cares about you then he should understand that. Most people love someone because the other person makes them happy. So in reality it's a selfish love not the actual love for the other person. So yes if he has selfish love then he may be difficult to get rid of and he may even get defensive. So expect that if he behaves that way.

just tell him that you really like him, he's a sweet man, and you really enjoyed dating him but need to move on because you don't see a future with him. Tell him you love him the way he is and that you'd hate for him to have to change for you. If yall are friends you can still hang out, see movies sometimes, but not like a bf/gf relationship. Also make sure to tell him when he isn't down, that'll make it bad.

Any lied and excuse is good - but is painful for him to accept.
You let somebody go too far in feelings. Is no way to be friends any more. Break his heart with the true and move on.
