I am 34 weeks pregnant hadn't really bought anything either because I wanted to wait until I found out what I got from my baby shower. Now I can get whatever is left over on my registries. Even if you aren't going to have a shower signing up for one at like Target.com can give you lots of ideas of what to get. They have recomendations, but the thing that I loved the most about it was that Target.com has so many customer reviews. So you are able to see if other parents were happy with the products and that way you don't have to be unhappy with what you buy.

Depending on your situation, like how much money you have and space....I would purchase a playard and then upgrade to a crib when the baby gets older. A playard is very portable and you'll be able to put it near your bed at night, most come with the bassinet area, changing table, and compartments for storage. Most have a mobile, night light, and vibrations(to sooth baby to sleep). So it's like an all in one package that saves a lot of money. And of course you can fold it up and take with you on visits.

A vibrating chair or swing will come in handy when you need to set the baby down. It helps that they are portable, so that when you are doing something you can move it to your area so that the baby can see you. It can also put baby to sleep.

Bottles- There are so many bottles! I wouldn't go out and buy a set of one kind of bottle until you find out which one works best for your baby and you. Just buy a few different kinds at first, because baby may not like the one you choose and others might make the baby have more gas. Also, bottles with a lot of indentions, nooks, and cranies will be harder to clean than the bottles made by avent which are smooth and easy to clean.

I could go on about what you need, but the other postings did a pretty good job with what to start off with.

I was very overwhelmed with what to buy at first! And it's not all the same for everyone. It all depends on things like income, space, breastfeeding or formula, etc. I just spent a lot of time looking at products online at places like Target, Walmart, BabiesRus, etc. Places that are in your area. By looking at all the products online you get a pretty good idea of what is out there and what you need because it's all catagorized. It also helps you find the lowest prices and best deals. Please feel free to e-mail me at Teggirl97@yahoo.com I can answer more questions that you have on this subject.

Honestly, just start stocking up on diapers and wipes. When I was pg with my girls I would buy a package of diapers everytime I went to the store and wipes every other time. AND I STILL RAN OUT!!! If you have a shower you can register for all the stuff you need and what you don't get at the shower, you can get afterwards. Don't buy too much until after your shower, because you'll end up with duplicates. You can start looking for a special outfit to bring the baby home in. That's always a fun thing to buy. But start deciding on the things you want, (i.e. carseat, stroller, highchair, swing, bath and bath accessories, burp rags, etc.) Get a magazine, go online, or go to the stores and browse. Then when it's time to register you'll know exactly what you want and what you don't get at the shower you'll have a list to take shopping. CONGRATULATIONS!!!! and have fun!!

You will need the following things by the time your baby is born, (but if you have a baby shower you will get many of these, so don't buy too much ahead of time. Usually frineds or co-workers will give you one, so register at your favorite stores!):

ESSENTIALS:
car seat- MUST HAVE before leaving hospital!
Crib or cradle w/ bedding (sheets, mattress pad, bumper pad & comforter)
receiving blankets (at least 12)
diapers & wipes
baby bath, powder, & lotion
cotton balls
clothes (Onesies, gowns, an outfit to come home from the hospital in)
bottles (if you plan to bottle-feed.. also a good idea to have at least a couple for supplemental forumla or expressed milk feedings.)
alcohol (to clean cord with)
formula (if bottle feeding)
baby bath tub
nail clippers
thermometer (hospital will usually give you one)
diaper bag
infant Tylenol drops
burp cloths (cloth diapers work great and are inexpensive!)
towels & wash cloths

NON ESSENTIALS THAT ARE NICE TO HAVE:

swing
playyard w/bassinet
baby monitor
bounce seat
stroller
Mylicon drops (In case baby has colic/gas)
mobile for the crib
changing pads (Table not necessary.. it's nice but I have 4 kids and never saw the need for a table just for changing diapers when the bed & a pad works fine.)
rocking chair
sun sheilds for the car windows

Best thing to do right now is wait for the baby shower. You can get some really nice things. For mine I got a car sear, a walker, a swing, clothes, and more clothes. If you already know the sex get the baby onsies and lots of gowns. Stock up on diapers now b'cause when the baby comes you'll notice how expensive it gets. Always check out sales and bargains on everything. You can get a basinet now and a crib later. Blankets, socks, hats, lots of bottles, a bottle sterilizer, formula...A changing table is nice but not necessary. A rocking chair will be a god send for you so keep your eye out for one on sale. Just wait for the shower and go from there!

If you aren't or haven't thought about it you should definitely have a baby shower. Especially if it is your first baby. A lot of times you can luck out and get most of the stuff you need.
If you don't want to have one, just start with the basics, bottles diapers, clothes. You can buy a little at a time, you still have a ways to go.
Congratulations, and good luck!!

You are going to need a car seat to take the baby home from the hospital. A crib or bassinet for the baby to sleep in. Sleepers are a necessity. Diapers and wipes are a good idea although the hospital will probably give you some. You will need formula and bottles if you aren't going to breastfeed. That should get you started.

I would buy a couple of packages of Swaddlers diapers.
Two packs of size one diapers, baby laundry soap. Baby body wash for baths. Start looking for an outfit to bring baby home in.

All depends if your going to have a shower before or after the baby is born. I had one of each it was great.

If no shower then sleepers, I had about 10 pairs it made it easier not to worry about laundery every other day! lol

just buy alittle at a time. maybe everytime your out to get grocerys or a gift for someone, pick something up for the baby. Im 14 weeks and I got onesies, sleepers, socks, a few toys, some bottles,a bath tub and a swing. just get the little things then a big one here and there. im holding back now b/c i know im having a baby shower (around 7-8 mths) and i did a baby registry on toys r us.com, and walmart.com for people to see what i need, and whatever i dont get at the shower i will go out and get then myself. you have so much time. if you are having a shower , do a baby registry. if not.. ask someone if they would throw you one. then you would get the things you need. best of luck to you and the baby. congrats!

It depends. Do you know the sex of the baby. Start buying clothes. Dummies. Babies bottle. Any kitchen utencils you'll need that you dont have e.g a microwave. A booster seet for the car. Toys. A cot. Bedding for the cot. Icould go on... Ihope this is helpful.
