The scandal just happened to coincide with the last day of Congress, but it also was in full swing when Bush had to sign the Immigration law. Could it be both sides benefitted form the diversion? The Dems because they didn't want Bush getting credit for increasing border security, and the Republicans chose to sign it during the firestorm surrounding Foley so there would be minimal coverage and less hispanics voters would hear about it?

Perhaps the Foley scandal served both sides.

So Boise... you have an anwer there or just typical Liberal subterfuge? I asked a simple question, or am i taking for granted you can think about both sides of an issue instead of just the one you've been indoctrinated to believe. Don't worry, one day you'll mature and realize your Liberal views were all a pack of lies.

Republicans could possibly view Foley as a convienent patsy for the Immigrantion Reform bill, especially considering that Foley is from the 16th Congressional District of Florida. Fifty-five percent of the vote went to Bush in 2004 and Repulicans have held the district for 16 consecutive years out of the past twenty six years the district has been in existence.

Possible, but I wonder what Foley thought about it. Also, I wonder if this was proved, could both sides be sued for aiding and abetting a crime as there is no way of knowing if children would be harmed during the time span that the scandal was happening and the public was made aware of it.Also, as all the ruckus was going on, the news was leaked that the actual funds that were appropriated for the fence were spent on something else. That should show all of us how serious our elected Representatives are about enforcing laws.

It's politics! Nothing is a coincidence. They are like diapers. You change them for the same reason. Of course is was a diversion. But be careful, it can hurt both sides. Voters these days can see through all the smoke politicians try to blow up our rear ends. Well, i would like to think that.

I think that both sides knew about it but the Dems sat on it until it could be used to their advantage. The Dems are trying to pull out any dirt they can to discredit the Republicans.
Take a look at the Dems on multiple occasions they have acted in worse ways and gotten away with it. The Kennedy's have notorious for their scandals. Clinton has gotten away with adultery and lying while in office. With no punishment whatsoever yet they rake the Republicans over the coals.
I think they knew what they were doing and did it to gain political momentum for an upcoming election year. Unfortunately for them, they still don't have my vote.

Many Republicans are worried
the congressman Mark Foley's child sex scandal
will hurt Republicans in this year's elections.
But it may end up helping them
because it draws attention
away from all the other scandals
that might affect the election even more.

The Foley scandal distracts from
Bush's network of secret torture camps.

The Foley scandal distracts from
the fact that the war in Iraq is making terrorism worse.

The Foley scandal distracts from
the fact that Osama bin Laden is still free.

The Foley scandal distracts from
the fact that Iraq is in a civil war.

The Foley scandal distracts from
the fact that 2700+ soldiers died in Iraq for nothing.

The Foley scandal distracts from
the fact that we are now losing the war in Afghanistan, too.

The Foley scandal distracts from
the Jack Abramoff and Tom Delay scandals.

The Foley scandal distracts from
the fact that Bush let New Orleans die.

The Foley scandal distracts from
the fact that the national debt is about to
exceed 10 trillion dollars.

The Foley scandal distracts from
the Abu Ghraib scandal.
And Haliburton's no bid contracts,
global warming, the failed war in Lebanon,
failed diplomacy with Iran and North Korea,
ignoring the Geneva Conventions, the United Nations,
and the Anti-ballistic missle treaty,
warrantless wire tapping of our phone conversations,
no weapons of mass destruction,
and Bob Woodward's latest book "State of Denial".

So although this sex scandal is bad for Republicans,
it isn't nearly as bad as all the other scandals.
Besides Clinton won with a sex scandal.
I think Republicans are better off
dealing with a sex scandal
than dealing with their record of failures.

I really don't think it will have much effect on the outcome of the November elections. A few dullards on Yahoo Answers are being kept off the streets by the scandal. You know the group that I'm referring to. Hint:They didn't have any morals until a few days ago.

That's an interesting thought, but I don't think it's the case. The Foley story is being abused by both sides, though, knowingly.

I'm sure that the democrats knew all along they just waited for the right time to drop the bomb. it kills me that the democrats push for all these gay laws but when faced with the issue they ridicule the person involved. i would think that they would embrace the guy and offer him a position in the democratic party.

well... if that's not a coincidence... then neither are dropping gas prices, rising terror alerts near elections or anything else that paranoid people talk about...

I mean... we will never know for sure what's a conspiracy or not... and some things seem very convenient on both sides... but what issues are just "convenient" and which are "smoke screens"? who knows...

Maybe someone was just bothering and trying to have sex with teenage boys. Why are the republicans trying to make it look like the democrats did something wrong? It was a Republican senator who did wrong and it was the Republican leadership of the House trying to cover it up plain and simple. There is a real problem with the right wingers trying to make political hay out of this rather than trying to protect underage pages.
