Sounds like silverfish larvae.
Like the other answer, his were silverfish too.
I have them. They stay mostly in the bathroom, but sometimes I find them in other places too.
They come up from the drains, and I think they may live under the baseboards. Harmless really. Just keep floors and rugs clean and free of dust or clutter.

I found a silver thing on my bathroom floor the other day which looked like a little fish, it was really quick and made me feel ill. No legs but it didnt look like it had rolled in sand? Maybe they come in different colours?

I don't know about your sand rolling thing - but for the person with the silver thing it is a silverfish - they are nasty, dirty and breed like crazy. You need to get rid of the silver fish or they will take over.
