There is no evidence of an expanding space. In fact the evidence is not of an expanding space. If space were expanding then sources of electromagnetic radiation would produce longer and longer wavelengths as space expanding. When comparing light from distant objects it is seen that the light when produced had the same wavelength as light that is produced here at the present time.
From observation it is clear that the universe is expanding into a fixed multidimensional frame. It is also clear that the direction of the expansion from the Big Bang is not in a spatial dimension. We know this because of the observation that all distant objects are moving away from us. This is true for all observers anywhere in the universe. This observation also tells us that this transition is in a different dimension since the uniform redshift can only be the result of objects that are moving perpendicular to the observer. Any action that is perpendicular to another is recognized as a action in a different dimension.

I didn't think that space would expand forever; do you have any evidence to support that statement...? We cant MEASURE space without matter. Unless we have two particles, we can't measure the distance between them; and unless we have a minimum of three particles, we can't measure the area of the figure (triangle) they define; and unless we have a minimum of four particles, we can't define the volume of the figure (tetrahedron) they define. There may be space; that is to say, 'distance' out there, beyond the matter of the universe, but until matter gets there, there is no way to measure it.
Infinite empty space would not seem big, if it was truly empty. If you were floating in infinite empty space, you would not be able to tell if it extended infinitely far from you or if it formed a skin-tight but flexible shell around you, because there would be nothing else to measure by.

I have read all the answers. Universe means everything. space time and matter. If we say there is something outside universe, then by definition it would not be universe. Usually the analogy of expanding balloon is given to explain the expansion of the universe. If we take balloon with some coloured dots and observe its expanding one expansion is as we see it a ballon is exapnding into a three dimensional space. In this picture it is expanding into space out side it. But if you see the exapnsion of the ballon as seen by an ant sitting on it; ant as it does not hav ethe concept of three dimension would say that some space is created between two dots on the balloon and ballon is not expanding int something out side it. The exapansion of our universe is like this, but instaed of a two dimensional world of an ant we have a three dimensional world of man where in th espace is craeted between to gallaxies, say as the universe expands

(it expands into itself.) space being infinite and forever (time) eternal...to better understand the answer you need to understand the point of relativity. the point where all things that (have existed,do exist, will exist.) become relevant or irelevant to the observer. the point of view of the observer is always incomplete. because the observer can only observe a small percentage of all there is to be observed. you must move the point and compare observations in order to gain a more complete observation. the point of relativity is always in the (presentence) unless it is hypothetical & or theoretical.

That will be easy. Answer is more space of course, infinite space, or else how can it expand forever?

Who knows, nobody. Just theory. We will never be able to 'see' passed our universe, just like we cannot see what happened b4 the big bang. Its a question that can never be answered.

that is one of the unanswered questions in the universe but my guess would be that it pushes nothing back and spreads
