Can anyone tell me exactly where to find the Ballast Resistor in my 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee, I know it's near the engine bay, but where exactly? Thanks.

The problem is that when I start the car, it cranks and doesn't start. But if I turn it over again it starts right away, but keeps trying to die the whole time I am driving and does die and I have to wait a few minutes before starting the whole scenario over again. I have so far replaced the fuel pump assembly, the ignition coil, and have replaced the battery and spark plugs, wires and distributor. I even took it back to the shop to have them test the work they did (fuel pump) and there is no issue with that. So I am basicly back to square one and someone suggest that it might be the ignition circuit that is attached to the ballast resistor. I really need help.

I'm not a Jeep or Chrysler nut, but I doubt if a '97 has a ballast resisitor.

Ballast resistors were used when cars used regular coils for the spark. The 12 volts from the battery would be used to get the car started, then some of the battery voltage going to the coil would be dropped by the ballast resistor to prolong the life of the ignition components, i.e. coil, plugs, etc.

This jeep has OBDII, you should be able to get it read at Auto Zone.

Sounds like it could be a crank or cam sensor.

Like she suggested, the "purple" twine is meant to be a "resistance twine" and artwork like a ballast resistor. in case you're changing the resistance twine with copper you will mount a ballast resistor on the hearth wall. between the twine from the swap (terminal "C" or "IGN") and the + area of the coil and status off the metallic because of the fact they do get warm! i does no longer placed it below the sprint, it rather is a hearth threat. If the resistance twine became burned up, (somebody used a intense overall performance coil and the unique twine) the ignition swap is often broken.

Your 1997 does not have a ballast resistor.

You can try buying a 20 buck repair manual. It has always helped me in the past. I bought one for each of my 5 cars that i own. BTW all running well and in good condition.

find the primary (low voltage) positive wire and follow it up probably on the firewall.

My searches are showing it is not required on that vehicle.
