World Books are consistently in trouble for bad business practice. They're always on Watchdog and being taken to court.
Check any paperwork you've received from them and find see the conditions are. Check your consumer rights -
You are entitled to a cooling off period.
Goods must be delivered within 30 days of ordering.
I strongly suspect that they have no legal grounds to demand payment for goods you haven't received. I would either consult a solicitor or speak to the CAB.
Best of luck.

This won't just go away after 38 days. That would be great, but it's not reality. You will still have to pay the balance in full, and it will be on your credit report as a negative. Since you are so young, you don't want that to happen. My suggestion is that you call the bank back, and ask to speak to a manager. Explain the situation, and tell them that you are willing to work with them, but you simply cannot pay it in one payment. Tell them that you will deposit a certain amount of money until the account is current. Most financial institutions are willing to get their monry any way they can, so they should be willing to work with you. If they say no, that they will only take it in one payment, then you should do whatever you can to earn that money fast. Get a job, borrow it from someone. If you can't pay it all within 38 days, it will probably be reported to a collection agency. The collection agency will call you, and call you, and call you, and call you until you pay them, but they will most likely arrange a payment plan for you to pay off the debt. If this debt does go into collections, the faster you pay it, the shorter it will be on your credit report as a negative. The good news is that it's not a huge amount of money, so if you really put your mind to it you should be able to pay it off pretty quick. Good luck!

Ahhh..good ole World Books! Up to their usual brilliant customer service again!
Last year around Easter they billed me for books that I KNOW I did not order! First they said that the books had been left in a storage area next to my house (there's no storage area and I live in a flat on the 2nd floor!) Then they said I had "signed" for the books (at the time I was "signing" for the books I was in the Caribbean at a wedding!) When my neighbour ACROSS THE ROAD was cleaning out his garden this summer he found the books in some bushes he was clearing!
The bottom line is this. If you owe them the money, make an agreement to pay a minimum amount and stick to it. If you never received any books, tell them if they do not stop harassing you, you will take legal action. That should send them away with their tails between their incompetent legs!

Do Not start paying the collection people
You do not owe THEM
contact the company and tell them you will send payments to them in the amounts you can afford---and will not make payments to an agency
And, rest assured that they will not be sending anyone by to repo all the knowledge you have gained by using their product !!!!

I don't know about where you live but in America they can't do anything beyond putting it on your credit report for seven years and then it comes off. It'll go to a collection agency yes but you don't have to pay them either.

ring them asap if you send a letter and it doesnt arrive then you snookered, really you should have rang them as soon as you got the first bill, and always get the name of the person you've spoken to.
Dont ever worry about debts and the end of the day its only money, its not worth sleepless nights over!

the same happened to me,and id not even received any books or subscribed.
i rang the solicitors up who where dealing with it and explained,
and they dropped the case.
i think we all need to be careful when entering competitions and surveys on line as i think they pass on details.

In th US, if you are under 18, you can't legally enter a contract. Tell them you are a minor.
