The main thing you can do is get your breathing right.
There are several things that can affect your ability to sing the note you're aiming for, or your ability to either hold the note or change the note, as required.
The most usual problem, and the easiest to put right, is too much tension in some breathing muscles, and too little in others.
A lot of singing exercises are designed to train these muscles, and the work that you need to do will be very specific to you, and to the style of singing that you want to do.
Your level of confidence will affect how, and how much, tension affects your voice too. If you speak confidently and clearly in public, then you're using the same muscles (although not necessarily in the same balance).
If you speak too quickly, or you mumble, when you try to speak in public, then you can improve by practising speaking.
Use a mirror, and start with one word. Say each letter, as if you need to explain the sound to an alien. Then put them together. Change the word; make it last longer, or say it overandoveragainveryquickly. Notice how you're breathing.
Make sure your chest isn't tight, and your tummy isn't tight, and your neck is loose and tall, and try not to hurry your breathing or breathe too deeply. You need to feel relaxed and happy.
Practise speaking loudly, slowly and clearly in a large empty room. Say anything, but concentrate on making it effortless. If you can, get a friend to listen from the other side of the room, and tell you what was audible and what wasn't.
Move your mouth more than you would normally, and don't shout.
IMPORTANT: Relaxed breathing and speaking exercises are pretty safe, if you don't overdo them, but don't try any singing exercises without a tutor; you can damage your voice.
Enjoy your singing, even if people say you're bad at it. Don't sing too loud too often, just in case they're right.

1. You must sing with your heart - I mean, you can't impress anyone, unless you yourself enjoy your singing.
2. Start with bathroom singing and then at home. If family members don't complain, you may sing in friends' company on suitable occasions.
3. Try and sing then in bigger gatherings.
4. Always rehearse well before singing before crowd.
5. Use a synthesiser or harmonium to take help in finding the right notes and to check your scale/ pitch.
6. Practice cautiously, particularly the very low and high notes.
7. singing requires good knowledge of the beats. If you don't synchronise your singing with beats, it could be a big let down.
8. Using karaoke CDs / cassettes and mic for practice (and even for performance) is a great help.
9. Listening to great works of musicians/ other singers can give you adequate exposure and improve your own singing style.
10. Do exercise regularly. Holding your breath while singing long lines and bringing variation in the notes requires healthy lungs, healthy voice box , so that you have control over your voice and you don't go breathless during singing.
11. All the very best ! Go ahead and feel like a great singer (to be) !

Right! Good for you for asking.
Get yourself a very good tuning device (50 pounds at least) the same as instrumentalists use to tune their instruments.
What they do: you play/sing a note - it tells you the note and lets you know if your flat, sharp, or just in tune.
I bought one for for a saxaphone player 'cos it's very hard to hear the actual note your playing. Now the saxaphonist is always in tune. It will work just as well for vocals.
