A cinema is a movie house.

A theater is anywhere a production is put on, not necessarily a movie.

All kinds.

It is the same a a theater. It is there for me to go to when I am in need of movies.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning
Director: Jonathan Liebesman
Stars: Jordana Brewster, Matthew Bomer, Diora Baird (Full Cast)
Studio: New Line Cinema

The Plot: On one last road trip before they're sent to serve in Viet Nam, two brothers (Handley and Bomer) and their girlfriends (Baird and Brewster) get into an accident that calls their local sheriff (Ermey) to the scene. Thus begins a terrifying experience where the teens are taken to a secluded house of horrors, where a young killer is being nurtured.

THE BUZZ: After the cheapie original remake made over $80 million in the U.S. alone, it was just a matter of time before a new spin would be put on the old story of Leatherface. But shouldn't the origin story of a horror legend take more than 90 minutes to tell? And shouldn't it be more than a cloaked draft-dodging cautionary tale? (We stretched for that one.) Jonathan Liebesman (Darkness Falls) replaces Marcus Nispel this time around (an even trade off), and Joanna Brewster replaces Jessica Biel as the main screamer. Advantage: Brewster, as we forgot she was in The Faculty.

Employee of the Month
Director: Greg Coolidge
Stars: Jessica Simpson, Dane Cook, Dax Shepard (Full Cast)
Studio: Lions Gate Films

The Plot: Upon hearing the store hottie (Simpson) will canoodle with the employee of the month, an uptight cashier (Shepard) and a slacker stockboy (Cook) square off to earn the honor.

THE BUZZ: How refreshingly, um, low concept ... Something tells us the casting of Jessica Simpson will alienate the core audience of what looks to be, on paper anyway, a stoner comedy. And besides, the Costco girl should come across as something so magical you can't even exist in her realm. Simpson lost that allure when she put on those Daisy Dukes and shilled pizza bites. Put Anna Faris in a red smock and you have a crowd-pleaser.

The Departed
Director: Martin Scorsese
Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson (Full Cast)
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures

The Plot: Two men (DiCaprio and Damon) from opposite sides of the law are undercover within the Boston State Police department and the Irish mafia, and as discoveries are made on both sides that compromise their positions, the moles are dispatched to find out their enemy's identities.

THE BUZZ: One of the more non-linear crime stories in recent memory in the hands of a fumbly veteran, The Depahhhted promises to be the spectacle of awards season (next to Dreamgirls?). Per usual, Scorsese's gunning for Oscar, and rumor has it if it weren't for his film's ultraviolent third act, he might've finally nabbed the Best Picture statue. Although perhaps we're editorializing just a tiny bit there. So now the focus has turned on Jack Nicholson, who's bloodied performance is set to introduce him, and Scorsese, to the younger generation. Where does this leave Matt and Leo? In a lurch, a situation just like what their character have to face.

The Queen [limited]
Director: Stephen Frears
Stars: Helen Mirren, Michael Sheen, James Cromwell (Full Cast)
Studio: Miramax Films

The Plot: In the wake of the death of the beloved Princess Diana, Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minster Tony Blair clash over the public and private aspects of the tragedy, and its impact on both the monarchy and government.

THE BUZZ: How many women can say they've played both Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Elizabeth II -- within a year, no less? Mirren, who has the only genuine movie star role of the year, was Queen Bess in the sexy, sumptuous HBO miniseries Elizabeth I, and now essays that monarch's famous namesake in what looks to be an austere but potentially emotionally scathing portrait of the current royal family. Her Best Actress win at Venice makes her the early Oscar favorite, and something reminds us to not forget about James Cromwell as the hug-phobic Prince Philip!

So Goes the Nation [NY]
Director: Adam Del Deo James D. Stern
Stars: George W. Bush, John Kerry, Ed Gillespie (Full Cast)
Studio: IFC Films

The Plot: A documentary that looks into the factors that contributed to George W. Bush's victory in the 2004 Presidential election, with a particular focus on the goings-on in Ohio, the state the tipped the election in Bush's favor.

THE BUZZ: Co-directors Adam Del Deo and James Stern (The Year of the Yao) reportedly offer one of the fairest, most perceptive stances on Bush vs. Kerry to date. Strategists, activists, and insiders from both sides are given opportunity to weigh in on the maneuvers and circumstances that resulted in Bush's re-election.

Select: Open Season The Guardian Jackass Number Two School for Scoundrels Fearless Gridiron Gang The Illusionist Flyboys The Black Dahlia Little Miss Sunshine

Open Season
Director: Roger Allers Jill Culton
Stars: Ashton Kutcher, Martin Lawrence, Debra Messing (Full Cast)
Studio: Columbia Pictures

The Plot: A deer buddies up with a domesticated grizzly bear when the two animals are alone in the woods during hunting season. Meanwhile, a forest ranger who raised the bear, embarks on a desperate search to find her friend.

User Rating:

THE BUZZ: Exactly who decided this would be official Ashton Kutcher week?

Jill Coulton, a non-Hollywood type and former storyboard artist for Pixar, teams up with veteran story writer Roger Allers for Sony Pictures Animation's second release (their first, Monster House, underperformed this summer and is getting a 3D re-release in October). And while the escaped/lost animal idea seems a little played out (ahem), count on Steve Bencich and Ron Friedman (Chicken Little, Brother Bear) to create a refreshing story for their extra-lively cast. We are, however, quite surprised SPA isn't giving Season a bigger push.

The Guardian
Director: Andrew Davis
Stars: Kevin Costner, Ashton Kutcher (Full Cast)
Studio: The Walt Disney Company

The Plot: After surviving a horrific tragedy, rescue swimmer Ben Randall (Costner) turns to teaching, and soon encounters Jake Fischer (Kutcher), a cocky young man in need of a mentor. In time, Randall takes Fischer with him to Alaska, where he is to learn tough lessons on the Bering Sea.

User Rating:

THE BUZZ: Wow, our eyes are full of salty tears already ... We almost needed a paragraph break in order to get into the life lessons this movie has in store for you. Call it the dramatic reshaping of Mr. Demi Moore, or the next step in Costner's attempt at career stability; more than anything, we get this title confused with Costner's The Bodyguard, and now all we can see is Ashton in leather pants, being carried off in Kevin's arms. AKA The Bodyguardian.

Jackass Number Two
Director: Jeff Tremaine
Stars: Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Chris Pontius (Full Cast)
Studio: Paramount Pictures

The Plot: The Fab 11 return with all new stunts and gross-outs.

User Rating:

THE BUZZ: Johnny Knoxville's TV show ended and gave birth to a wildly popular film back in 2002. Since then, Knoxville's embarked on a spotty movie career while his old cohorts have gone on to worse things (Bam Margera is particularly unwatchable, and former friend Chris Raab is sitting out the sequel). So why not round up the old gang and make another pile of cash? The entire cast and crew are back this second time around, and we understand the sequel is going to be more taboo and dangerous than its predecessor. Anyone up to try on a beard made of the cast's pubic hair? Read more here.

School for Scoundrels
Director: Todd Phillips
Stars: Billy Bob Thornton, Jon Heder, Jacinda Barrett (Full Cast)
Studio: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM)

The Plot: A hapless meter reader (Heder) enrolls in confidence-building that will hopefully help him win over his dream girl (Barrett). His wishful thinking is complicated when his instructor (Thornton) also locks her in his sights.

User Rating:

THE BUZZ: The guy comedy was big in 2005, so the Weinsteins are all, "let's put out an R-rated comedy of our own." Fan favorite Jon Heder, savvy comedy director Todd Phillips (did you hear about this, by the way?), and grumpy old man BBT should have no problem connecting with the 18-34 demographic here. The supporting cast alone is like a dream for the FHM set ... and hey, did you hear about the Jolie jab Thornton worked in?

Fearless
Director: Ronny Yu
Stars: Jet Li (Full Cast)
Studio: Rogue Pictures

The Plot: Huo Yuanjia (Li) overcomes personal and physical setbacks to become the most famous Chinese fighter at the turn of the 20th century.

User Rating:

THE BUZZ: Can it be that Fearless is Jet Li's last action movie? The star wants to move away from the genre, but will his fans accept him as anything but an exceptional being. (I mean, do you want to see Jet Li as an aging cop or depressed dad?) Ronny Yu directs, and did you know he ditched Snakes on a Plane for this?

Gridiron Gang
Director: Phil Joanou
Stars: The Rock, Xzibit (Full Cast)
Studio: Columbia Pictures

The Plot: A counselor (The Rock) at Camp Kilpatrick, a juvenile detention center in LA, launches a football program to help rehabilitate a group of young inmates. After weeks of rigorous training, the Kilpatrick Mustangs look to compete against area high schools, where coaches and players alike are wary of mixing it up with criminals.

User Rating:

THE BUZZ: Can you smell what the Rock's been cooking lately? After stinkers like Doom and Be Cool, a feel-good football drama based on an inspiring true story might be the one-time NFL contender's recipe for success. And from the look of the trailer, it seems as though the former wrestler will have plenty of monologues to help him make the transition to drama. Adapted from a 1993 documentary of the same name, Gridiron could put the action hero back in the game and offer docu filmmaker Phil Joanou a chance to break out of his embarrassing film funk, too. Though formulaic to a fault, we'll admit we get choked up watching the clip.

The Illusionist
Director: Neil Burger
Stars: Edward Norton, Jessica Biel, Paul Giamatti (Full Cast)
Studio: Yari Film Group Releasing

The Plot: In turn-of-the-century Vienna, as magician Eisenheim (Norton) gains a public following, Crown Prince Leopold (Sewell) yearns to debunk his talent. Leopold dispatches Chief Inspector Uhl (Giamatti) to unveil Eisenheim as a fraud, though his target has in a mind a grand scheme that is rooted in his personal history and involves Leopold's intended (Biel).

User Rating:

THE BUZZ: Norton and Giamatti make any movie magical. And a score by Philip Glass is bewitching. At one point, New Line, Sony, Lionsgate, and the Weinsteins were all interested in distributing, but balked. Maybe it was the reported $20 million price tag that scared 'em away. Or was it Jessica Biel's accent? All the fake beards? Unfortunately, one of this film's biggest trick to date was its disappearance act after Sundance. We, like many others, are really just waiting for The Prestige to be released.

Flyboys
Director: Tony Bill
Stars: James Franco, Jean Reno, Jennifer Decker (Full Cast)
Studio: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM)

The Plot: A romantic drama that charts the adventures of Lafayette Escadrille, a group of American fighter pilots who volunteered for French military before the U.S. entered WWI -- a unit that includes Rawlings (Franco), a young pilot who falls for a French woman (Decker).

User Rating:

THE BUZZ: Oracle founder Larry Ellison, also known as the ninth richest person in the world, ponied up nearly half of the film's $60 million budget for savvy producer Dean Devlin, who has set up a stable of future films at MGM. Ellison's attention was focused on the project by his son, David, a trick pilot who stars in the film. Despite the positive early feedback and a hype-generating spin through Comic-Con -- the footage we saw there truly amazed, as the special effects worked seamlessly with the old-fashioned planes -- we still feel as though MGM will have a hard time getting people out to see this without a big star in the cast. As one of the guys over at Box Office Prophets said: "All the pieces are in place for the film to be set up as an action-oriented blockbuster that unfortunately flops when it hits the theaters, or a character-driven drama that vastly exceeds expectations of the conventional wisdom. Keep your fingers crossed."

The Black Dahlia
Director: Brian De Palma
Stars: Josh Hartnett, Aaron Eckhart, Scarlett Johansson (Full Cast)
Studio: Universal Pictures

The Plot: In 1940s Los Angeles, a beautiful young actress is murdered, mutilated, and her corpse cut up into pieces and scattered in a vacant lot; two cops (Hartnett and Eckhart) investigate and are drawn into a seamy world of sex and violence. Based on the legendary unsolved true story and the unsettling novel by James Ellroy (LA Confidential).

User Rating:

THE BUZZ: Neither Johansson nor Swank are playing the mysterious "Black Dahlia" -- that would be Mia Kirshner, Jenny of "The L Word" fame, appearing only in flashbacks. Slated to go before the camera back in 2004, the movie was originally meant to star Hartnett and Mark Wahlberg; when financing problems delayed production, Walberg skipped over to the Italian Job, and the dreamy Eckhart brought on board. Can De Palma resurrect his career yet again? Even if he can't, the whole movie sounds lusciously creepy in a way only De Palma can pull off. P.S. It was here that real-life couple Hartnett and Johansson got things going, and news from the film's Cannes premiere indicate that an explicit sex scene with the two stars nearly overshadows the story's turns and twists.

Little Miss Sunshine
Director: Jonathan Dayton Valerie Faris
Stars: Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Greg Kinnear (Full Cast)
Studio: Fox Searchlight Pictures

The Plot: A dysfunctional family determined to get their young daughter into the finals of a beauty pageant take a trip from New Mexico to California in their VW bus.

User Rating:

THE BUZZ: Within hours of its premiere at Sundance, Fox Searchlight snapped up worldwide rights to this dark comedy from Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (who probably never want you to know they once directed videos for Belinda Carlisle, Extreme, etc.). The co-directors and screenwriter Michael Arndt have apparently created a relatable, accessible cast of characters that never get too quirky for their own good. A suicidal Steve Carrell? A smack-addicted Alan Arkin? Abigail Breslin stealing Dakotah Fanning's child star crown? We're sold. Besides, wouldn't you want Alan Arkin to tell you that you're the most beautiful girl in the world?
