I grew up on a dairy, and cows do that when their calves are taken away to be weaned, sold, etc, also when they are separated from the rest of the herd (both cases they are calling out for whoever), also when they are in heat and calling for a mate, and around feeding and milking time. We had a weaning pen for the calves a long way from the house so they didn't keep us awake mooing. Usually, that only lasts a week or so, but has to be done before the cow can come in heat, breed, and have another calf.

My grandparents had a farm with cows on it and when a cow moos it can either be hungry, lonely, in pain, or just plain bored. Since they only have one sound it's impossible to get any meaning out of it.

(Not all male cows are bulls)

Cows are usually herd animals, and mooing is there way of communicating.
