We now know that e- are located in specific regions around the nucleus of the atom. These regions are known as orbitals. The orbitals have different shapes and there are different numbers of each type of orbital.

One orbital can hold at most 2 e-. Refer to your text for a better explanation. We assign a series of letters and numbers to the various orbitals and use these to place the e- in order from the nucleus outward.
