Adjust the valves.Valve lash is probably too tight.

Always give year, make, engine size and model # when asking questions.
2 & 4 stroke engines can have the same symptoms, but the repairs would be different.
Depending on the year and model, the bike can have points or CDI ignition.
Single cylinder and multi cylinder bikes are diagnosed differently.
The more info the better - how many miles on the bike, back fire on acceleration or deceleration, etc

if you havent changed the spark plug do it!!! Also when you park your bike make sure to shut off the gas and DO NOT put the choke on. That's what the cause was when my dirtbike was backfiring and now it runs perfect and when I am starting it... no backfire!

You are running too rich. Either your plug is too worn/fouled and cant burn the normal amount of fuel properly, or you are getting too much fuel and its not burning all the way. That allows fuel to get into your hot exhaust where it ignites, causing backfire. Check your pilot screw setting if ez.

could be an air leak in the exhaust pipe, perhaps where it meets the cylinder head
