When I bought my home PC almost 2 years ago I thought it was 56 kbps but was surprised to find 31.2 as max. What are some of the ways I can upgrade speed to 56 kbps dial-up?

This is affected by 3 main factors:
- modem compatibility: Your modem may support different optimizations than the ones supported by your ISP. There is also weaker connection speeds if you use a cheaper modem if with the same specs.
- phone line quality: Not only does this depend on the phone line loop lenght but also on it's technology and if it has any shielding issues and the such. If you can hear noise on your line that is your problem and you can contact your phone company to have it checked. If you don't hear noise and the line is your limitation then you're out of luck because replacing a phone line can cost over 4 000$ depending on the lenght.
- driver issue: Make sure to reinstall the latest driver for your modem from the manufacturer's web site.

The best way to determine if the problem is with the line or the computer you have two possible scenarios which I would encourage you to do:
- test another computer doing the same connection on the same line
- test your computer on a different line (preferably one that you know allows better connection speeds)

56K is the Maximum theoretical speed of your modem under ideal conditions. There is no such thing as ideal conditions. In reality, it's the quality of your phone line/connection that determines your real speed. Even then your actual connect speed will vary depending on local conditions. There are 'web accelerator' programs available to download/buy. Type that phrase into a search engine to find them. Even better, check out DSL for a REAL speed boost. DSL uses your existing phone line without tying it up when you're online and is much faster than dial-up. there are deals to be had if you look.

Dial-up modems frequently have a optimal velocity of fifty six kbit/s, in spite of if in maximum circumstances purely as much as fifty 3 kbit/s is possible. those speeds are at present seen the optimal possible; in many circumstances flow speeds would be decrease, averaging everywhere between 33-40 3 kbit/s. factors including telephone line noise and stipulations, as properly by way of fact the prevalent of the modem itself, if the modem is exterior or inner, all play a great section in determining connection speeds.
