No information ANYWHERE ? How about your textbook... or the fine fiction of Johnathan Jakes (North & South)
Okay, Iron is required for the making of steel... SO, the Union and Confederacy needed iron to steel for manufacturing muskets, rifles, pistols, cannon, bayonets, and swords.
The Union made strong use of their railroads... you need iron to make locomotives, and to make the steel for wheel sets, and rails and spikes.
The two Navy's require iron (and steel) for guns, cannon-balls, armor plating, and ship's boilers...
Now open your text book, go to this site, http://www.pbs.org/civilwar/

and do a little research...
