When you are hungry..your basic need is not met...so you cant be emotionally satisfied...that's your emotional need..without emotional satisfaction, you cant be friendly with others..that's the social needs...without being friendly, you cant realize your full potential...so that's your self actualization need...

I didn't realize just how important the hierarchy was (although it's pretty common sense if you think about it) until I truly saw it firsthand during my first year of teaching. There was a boy in my reading class whose family was extremely poor. He simply would not do work in class. He spent a couple hours a day pulled out for special needs, and the first thing they'd do was feed him a snack. All it took was a pack of peanut butter crackers to get him to start working. The same thing could often be applied to children who weren't getting enough sleep. A 20 minute nap in the morning did wonders for some children academically. It's hard to think that our students' basic needs aren't being met before they come to school. It's amazing to see the difference in their performance once these needs are met.

Going back 6 years to study but as far as i remember it concerns, physiological, safety, love, esteem and self actualization needs going up in a pyramid with physiological being the base need. Suggest you divide your class into groups and explain the base of these needs i.e. physiologial need is for the basic human to survive, get them to class what they would view as the need in each of the five levels and then re-group to discuss.

maslow hierarchy of needs helps to understand how their needs affects their behavior. knowing this allows you to understand why people do what they do and maybe allows you to modify their behavior whether you're a teacher or a fellow student.
