Get your hose out and put a nozzle on which has a very hard direct spray. Aim directly at said crack and blast the crack with a hard spray. If you have trouble getting the asphalt all out then get a large flat screwdriver and kinda break everything up so when you use the water again, dirt and mud will start to appear. Your trying to get where the dirt and asphalt meet (approx. 2" / 4"). Clean all of the cracks that need repair. Let this dry for up to 24 hours. Go to the local Hardware store and tell them you need some tar (like a milk shake) to put around the cracks. From the dirt up the side and maybe 2/ 4 inches away from the edges. Depending on how many cracks your repairing, you will need cold patch asphalt. when you get home break open the bag and let sit in the sun until soft and workable(1 to 3 hours). Break it all up with a shovel or just step on it with the side of your boots. Shovel is best, flip it over and over about every 10 to 15 minutes. After you have applied the tar, start shoveling the black top over the crack, go ahead and over fill all the holes and step on it, so as to compact it tightly between the edges. Leave it kinda above the grade because after driving over it with the car it will compact even better to keep moisture out.

how large is large? 1/2 inch ? 3 inches?

if they're not too big you should remove all the loose debris. then use a shop vac to remove all the dust and dirt. stuff the crack with the appropriate size backer rod(kinda like the donut hole of pipe insulation) then fill the crack with an elastomeric caulk made for asphalt that's suitable for your climate.

CLEAN THEM OUT & START MELTING YOUR LUG OF HOT TAR... POUR INTO CRACKS TO BRIM, & SPRINKLE MASONRY SAND( FINE SAND) ON TOP SO IT DOESN'T GET ON EVERYTHING
