Are you talking about US Government officials? The US Constitution provides for a separation between Church and State. The US was founded on freedom from religious persecution.

I don't think they should. You have to keep in mind though that some religions do have rituals within them that may be against the law. If there were no laws that could be enforced upon religion we would still be killing people for offerings to the gods. Another example is polygamy. That cult in southern Utah where the cult leader handed 12 yr old girls over for marriage to his 40-50ish friends. That was against the law as well. It is a problem though on determining the line.

Isn't that why the Pilgrims left England for America? Religious freedom? What did the government making laws on religion do for the English? Nada! And we dumped their tea in the harbor to boot!!

They should only be able to make laws concerning the separation of church and state not concerning the religions themselves.

Generally no but a criminal or terrorist organization can not hide behind a religion to justify illegal actions. If I started a 'religion' that wanted to kill Americans then government should step in.

What F*%$ing country do you live in? That is half the argument for separation of church and state. The government doesn't regulate the church and the church better stay out of the government.
