Did you buy your home based on its location? Like to be closer to work or stores or family? Or did you buy it because you really liked the actual house and don't necessarily like where it is located? Or did you compromise and find the best house nearest to the location you wanted? I ask because I'm having a hard time finding a house that both my husband and I can love. He wants to live in one town because it's a shorter commute to his job and he likes the town (he's lived there since he was young), but there are no good houses for sale in our price range and it's farther from the stores, doctors, etc. We would have to settle on a house we don't love to live there. I would prefer something closer to the main city and that would mean further from his job, but there are a lot better options for nice homes there. Do you think we would be more happy in a house we love or at a location we love?

Location--location--location--- it is dang near everything !!!
You can ALWAYS alter the house as you make it into a home---
but try that with where it is-----doesn't work too well -----
Go with the location and modify the best choice house to become the home you've always wanted !!!

I think that the best way to go is a location where you love. I purchased my house because the house was in my price range and it looked very nice but it ended up being that the location was terrible. The commute to my job is a long commute, the schools are far and the neighborhood is a drag. To make a good investment you should look at all the posiblilities first.

Be patient!!! I was and it has definately paid off. I am close to services, work, on a dead end cul-de-sac in a nice neighborhood, and have the totally finished square footage I insisted on (plus a shop and a park-like backyard). I puchased & moved into 1/2 of a nice duplex in '99 intending to buy a home & move, turning the duplex into a 100% rental in 2 years after I moved there. When I began my search, like you, there was nothing on the market that fit for the location & home features I wanted in my price range. Found my current home in '04, not '01 when I had planned, but I am VERY happy I held out for what I really wanted. I am VERY picky and an ex-Realtor to boot, so I doubt waiting for the right property to come on the market was a long wait for me. Likely much longer than you'll experience. My advise .. Don't Compromise your goals. Wait for the right home to come on & be prequalified with a lender and ready to buy.

Sure, I'm happy. We found a nice home on a quite culdesac, with a small city park behind us. Our yard is nice and flat, so the kids can play on their trampoline. We like the small town atmosphere, too... but we're close to St. Louis, which makes it sweet as well for shopping and entertainment.
