Don't let it get over 5 inches high. It will go to seed and you will have to start all over again. Anywhere between 3-6 inches is fine to mow.

Remember that in order for the roots to grow they need the nutrients being manufactured in the blades of grass. For a good root mat to grow, you need to let the blades grow as well.

I would wait until you see the blades are a nice dark green and wide. If you live where there is snow in the winter, then I would even consider letting it go until spring.

Consider it just like babay hair. Its fine and soft intil it starts to mature. Wait until a good months passes before tou decide to trim when the grass stems start to thicken, they are more likely to have enough strength to grow back.
