Walk past Big Ben and the House of Parliament and Buckingham Palace in the evening; go to Tower of London and the British Museum during the day. Have your evening meal in a pub - meat pies are usually quite good. If you have time, a boat ride on the Thames is great, but you'll be really pressed for time with only one day.
Consider getting a one-day travelcard - you can buy it in any tube station. Most of the time take the tube, it's fast, but take a double-decker bus at least once - ride it for awhile, and see various parts of London. Zone 1 is enough if you're just there for one day.
London is a great city - you could spend a lot of time there and not come close to seeing all that's worthwhile to see. Everything that people have mentioned is worthwhile, but you can't do it all in just one day.
Do as much research and planning ahead of time as possible - you'll be pressed for time as it is, and won't want to waste any.
Have fun, and good luck.

30 hours in London, well you could do so much in that time.
Take a rive cruise, see London from the Thames, it is an amazing city and one of the best ways to see it.
Take an open bus tour, which can be taken either by day or by night and see the city
Visit a museum or art gallery, most are free in London and are world class, such as Tate Modern or National Portrait Gallery or the Natural History Musuem.
You have to go and see Buckingham Palace and Big Ben, (although you can see these from you open top bus).
Then hang out in China Town and Soho, where you can see some of London's great diversity, grab a coffee or a bite to eat.
There is much much more in London but these are the highlights that you should squeeze in over the 30 hours.

Go see the Tate Britain, the London Eye, and the Houses of Parliament. They are all relatively near each other down the river (and it makes for a pleasant walk where you see the skyline). Then, by night, go either check out the Westbourne Studios or La Scala. Both fantastic clubs.
Also: be sure to find a pub lunch somewhere of bangers and mash (not some sort of Thai food. its good, but you're in London, so find some Brit food).
