So I am on my 2nd pregnancy, and I remember with my first I went to birthing classes. They told you how to measure your cervix in comparison to finger width. I totally forget this and was wondering if anyone else remembers??? I am 36wks along, and tend to dialate early and have very quick labors. I checked this morning and I know I have dilated a lot, just curious how much! Thanks for any advice on this!!!!

For information you need to know, here it is:
Dilatation is expressed in centimeters. For a relatively large fingers and hands, make the following generalizations:

1.5 cm: One finger fits tightly through the cervix and touches the fetal head.
2.0 cm: One finger fits loosely inside the cervix, but I can't fit two fingers in.
3.0 cm: Two fingers fit tightly inside the cervix.
4.0 cm: Two fingers fit loosely inside the cervix.
6.0 cm: There is still 2 cm of cervix still palpable on both sides of the cervix.
8.0 cm: There is only 1 cm of cervix still palpable on both sides of the cervix.
9.0 cm: Not even 1 cm of cervix is left laterally, or there is only an anterior lip of cervix.
10.0 cm: Can't feel any cervix anywhere around the fetal head.

Being checked for measurment or dilating actually dont mean anything as far as labor is concerned. For the measurment, they just want to make sure that your measuring right on track for the most part (or around there). They want to make sure you stay within that range instead of going from measuring right on track at one appointment to measuring 4 weeks ahead/behind at the next appointment. Since it's your second pregnancy, I'll guess you'll deliver a few days before your due date. A lot of doctors wont check for dilation until you go overdue or some just wont check at all until your in active labor. There really is no point to be checked, it is fun to know where your body and baby are at, but in the end it just gives false hope or it could be disappointing. If you really want to be checked, ask him at your next appointment. As for the test before inducing, I have no idea. I was induced and never recieved a test. Maybe a non stress test on baby?

This is my third pregnancy. With all 3 I've always measured right on track. I had my first at 38 weeks, with second I was induced at 38 weeks 6 days (but was contracting and 4 cm dilated when I went for induction). I'm not sure about the test. I didn't have any tests before I was induced. Good luck! Hope your little one comes soon!

PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT BE CHECKING YOURSELF!! Especially at 36 weeks, even as a trained L&D RN we are not able to check a women until they are full term (37 + weeks), and a doctor won't even check you unless they absolutely have to!!

What if you accidently broke your water, you have a cord prolapse and baby dies, I don't think people are going to sympathic to learn that it happened because you decided to check yourself.

Unless you have checked many, many cervix you would not know what you are feeling, there are folds of skin and the baby's head that you may think is your cervix but it is not.

Please do not check yourself anymore, leave it to the trained professionals!

You really shouldnt be checking yourself or messing around in there yourself, at this stage in your pregnancy. The more you mess around in there the more likely you could cause labor to start. I really advise against this.
