Would it be safe to use hard chemicals designed for hard water stains for instance CLR or industrial glass cleaners, I know it would be deadly for fish but could it be rinsed thourghly without any traces that would be deadly for the fish

VERY risky but it can be done (decontamination will require weeks of thorough rinsing, several 100% water changes, and use a BUNCH of carbon (as in pounds of it) before the tank is even considered safe for aquarium life).

There are safer agents to use, however, like vinegar. I once resorted to using CLR for hard water stains that were impervious to vinegar, however.

Vinegar and for the tough hard water stains mix some baking soda with the vinegar and scrub it. If that still doesn't work for the hard water stains, some are just so annoying, use a razor.

viniger was a great answer, after that, most pet stores sell a magnetic sponge one side goes in the tank and one on the outside against the glass. this is mostly used for salt water but it does help for fresh also.

do not use anything besides water, or if you want to purchase an aquirum cleaner than that also, but anything else will still be present when you fill up the tank agian and it will kill your fish, you shouldn't even use dish soap because it will kill your fish.

Please never use any cleaners. Let's just be safe. It could still possibly hurt the fish.
