I am shocked at the answers you were given 90% wrong and permanently damaging to your counters! Use mild soap and water, or they make granite cleaners you can get at home depot or the grocery store. My God people if you don't know what you are talking about don't answer the question! Are the two points worth someone damaging their very expensive counter tops!

I've got a granite fireplace and mantle and was told to only use a very slightly damp cloth to wipe off marks and then buff with very soft cloth - the Vileda blue one you can get from the supermarket is very good.

Start with a mix of washing powder and washing up liquid - gives a slight ammonia solution (thanks to an old chemistry teacher - makes your eyes water a touch!) - and use this on a cloth - wipe them over and then rinse.

(I also recommend this for cleaning your hands after getting oil on them from car repairs!)

Once done, use distilled vinegar - the clear stuff - and wipe over - removes any grease that the ammonia solution doesn't get!
