HE HE.. Well I can tell you if I gave my Mother in Law a reptile it would be the anaconda in hopes it would eat her!

But if you are serious...
One I hope you KNOW she likes reptiles... cause if she does not your gift will be trouble

Turtles are good... corn snakes,..

Stay away from any pythons, boas or igunas.. they are tough ,..eat live food or will get large..

Really I would think you could find a better animal... fish maybe

Good Luck

Like several others said, make sure your mother-in-law likes reptiles. If it is just for fun, you are subjecting that poor reptile to a life of misery. Depending on the reptile, they live about as long as a cat or a dog.

A good starter snake would be a ball python. Or a corn snake. They both get about 5 feet long, which is not too long for a snake.

A good starter lizerd would be either a bearded dragon or a leopard gecko.

I hope she likes reptiles, and that your not giving it to her as a gag gift. That's cruel to the animal, and a very expensive thing for your mom to keep, especially if she doesnt want it, and chances are she'll neglect it and not take care of it. If she does like reptiles, ask her what qualities she likes best in a reptile. Its best to let a person pick out their own pet, and not to suprise the person, because they are going to have to deal with the pet for a long time (reptile live for a LONG time) so they better like it. Bearded dragons are pretty common reptile pets, because they are very very cool! And friendly too!

If it is her first reptile and she really enjoys reptiles I would suggest two leopard geckos, they are great and don't require a lot of anything, they also make a really good pet for her first reptile or even if it is her hundredth, the other good thing is that they are able to be held just make sure she starts to play with them young so they get to know her.
