I think I know what you are saying, the same thing happened to my old laptop. It was the internal connection that died ... not the cable, which of course can be replaced.

Here are a couple of suggestions for getting your files off of old computer and on to new one.

1) If your battery is still good, see if someone you know has a computer that uses the same battery and ask them to charge it for you, there should be enough time then to transfer your files. It doesn't have to be the same computer, just one that uses same battery

2) Buy or borrow a case that fits laptop size hard drive, take your hard drive out, put it in, then connect it and transfer your files.

Good Luck.

[On Windows]
Start > All Programs > Accesories > System Tools > Files and Settings Transfer Wizard

Select all the music files/folders and select MS Works program folder

and select MS Works in the program settings list

[PS: probably easier just to buy a new charging cable of eBay]

you want to buy a new laptop because the power lead is faulty!!??

Somebody isn't telling the truth or has more money than sense.

If the cable is so new take it back if it is genuinely faulty, if you damaged it just buy a new cable.

the easiest would be a wireless network, you could take them both to a friend that has one and if they both have wireless cards (and they should) it is a piece of cake from there.

or you could upload the ms works to your yahoo briefcase they should be small enough

as for the music that may be harder as to the size and amount. burning them as mps should get it done.
I personally just have them on an external hard drive, but i am in a network of 4 computers.
