suggested origins of blue movie: one says the name came from the fact that Chinese brothels were painted blue on the outside; the second says it's from the blue spotlights used in striptease acts; and the third says it dates from the days when pornographic movies were shown on home projectors, which presumably gave them a bluish cast. In C. Gorham's Mr. Dolan, a character asks, "How would you like to come up to my place and see a blue movie?" Since that was 1949, it wasn't a video he meant, so this lends some credence to the third theory. Although, if blue meant 'obscene', the origin of the term for the movie seems obvious.

This comes from the term "blue money", this is the money a prostitute makes, therfore, since the only person involved in the sex are the ones in the movie, and the sale of the movie is legal, then it is called a blue movie. Kinda stupid when you think about it.

It comes from the old "blue pencil" that was used to censor scripts and also letters etc. during the war. So a "blue" movie is censored or should be.
