I have a carpet covering my gym floor, but not too happy with it....

That is probably the best possible flooring for the money. Wood will dent,chip and split, vinyl will get sliced and dented, tile will also. Carpet is quiet and will absorb the shock of the weights nicely. A good commercial piece will last a long time. Other than that, the foam type pads that you piec together look nice but come apart easily and cost a small fortune.

Pergo or a like product. Easy to clean and amazingly durable and scratch resistant. A definite + for resale value. Will last 15-20 years.

I would say indoor-outdoor carpet would be the most comfortable and durable
