I live in Indiana and I need to get a title to a van. When a friend of mine tried, the BMV made her run around in circles and charged her each time for the forms.

Hope this helps. I got it from the Indiana BMV site.

"What do I need to do to register my vehicle if I am a new Indiana resident?
Certificate of Origin
Odometer Statement
Proof of Insurance
Verification of Social Security Number
Note: You will also have to apply for a title before the license branch can sell you a license plate.

What do I need to take with me to the license branch if I am registering a used car I recently purchased?
The properly assigned vehicle title, current vehicle insurance information and verification of your Social Security Number."

You might try calling a branch of the BMV to verify what you need to bring in, as well.

If you have simply lost your title slip, just go get a duplicate. Minimal cost and hassle.

If you never had legal title in the first place, you need to apply for an abandoned title. That will trigger lots of running around and will take several months in some cases while the DMV tries to locate the legal owner of record.

In the end, you'll have to do whatever the DMV tells you to. There's no way around their procedures.
