Japanese hands down. Chinese, including their color symbolism for fortune, etc. is garish.

I've been to both Japan and China. The Chinese and Japanese have a great sense of beauty. Where the two cultures are similiar they are very similiar but where they are different they are very different. One way they are very different is their sense of color. The Chinese love bright colors whereas the Japanese love subtle colors. They use color sparingly also. For instance in the 17th-19th centuries Japanese export porcelain had bright colors to compete with the Chinese because that is what Europeans liked. But porcelain for their home market was subtle and often somber. When you see a temple in Japan that's painted bright red it is in classic Chinese style. Japanese usually love unpainted wooden buildings better than golden painted or highly decorated buildings. I love the Chinese sense of color but I admit sometimes it often is garish.
