Since you say it is cedar, it will turn a nice color of silver-gray and I would like that happen. The main reason is that anythign that you put on it will wear off, or be affected by weather and it will look uglier than a mud fence. Cedar is great, bugs don't like it, it normally will take years and years and years to show much deterioration.

Under any circumstances, do not put any varnishes on it. A penetrating sealer would be the best, but that will give you problems in a couple of years.

I would use boiled linseed oil, check it out in your hardware store. I wouldn't use any chemicals, or surface coatings such as varnish. Boiled linseed oil is totally natural, and inexpensive. It penetrates the wood to provide excellent water resistance, and has a very pale colour that won't adversely affect the natural appearance of the wood, it just leaves a slight attractive sheen. Try it on a spare bit of your cedar first to see how you like it.

Most people I know use a water sealant - like Thompson's, Behr, - there are
others. In high traffic areas, you may need to do it once a year. Some people
don't like Thompson's because they weakened their formula a few years
ago and didn't advertise it and created a lot of ill will and they brought it
back to the original when their sales dropped.

I would suggest a clear stain or varnish. However go to your nearest Hardware store for the best answer. I suggest Home Depot.
