Unlike other bulbs, onions do NOT produce separate bulbs, they simply grow a larger and larger onion bulb; you must wait for your onion to grow very tall shoots; eventually it will produce a big puffy flower at the top which will yield lots of seeds; you must cover this with a plastic bag to capture the seeds, otherwise a lot of them will blow away, etc. These can be replanted to yield more onions next year. This is usually considered pretty difficult gardening, and it's easier to start from already-sprouted seeds purchased from someone else.

I've got a habit of planting sprouting onions,I just fill a pot and place the onion on top and leave it out side.It eventually grows a stem that flowers into a white allium type flower except the stem twists with the sun.Certainly unusual but good fun for the kids.

I agree with another of the answers that the brown, red and white onion varieties donot reproduce bulblets like other flowering bulbs, eg Daffodils, tulips. They simply sprout and flower and you collect the seed to reproduce the plant. The only type of onion that I know of that actually produces bulblets is an old fashioned variety known as a Potato Onion which is closely related to Shallots.

it depends where you are planting it and in what soil. If you leave an onion in a bag, it will sprout roots. It will do this in the ground and grow
