There is a very good chance he could have surpassed Gretzky's records.
Both averaged around 2 points per game, and Mario often played while he was suffering from injuries; if he did not have cancer or those other injuries and back problems who knows how well he would have done.

The only question was did the injuries make him better? If they didn't make him better and more determined then yeah Wayne wouldn't have stood a chance if Mario had been playing injury free. We aren't just talking about cancer either. Remember he played alot of his carrer with a chronic back injury. He didn't have the greatest teammates when he started. Put him on a team as good as what Wayne played on and we may already be talking about his records, even with his injuries.

Lemieux is a great player however I do not feel he could fill the skates of Gretzky and beat his records. Mario is too much of a pretty boy and more of a puck hog then Wayne ever was.

He'd break some of Wayne's records. Highly doubt he'll get more points though than the great one.

if he was cancer free and stayed healthy then I believe he would have had a chance to break Gretzky's record

I do admit that Mario was a great player , but Gretz was better. If Mario was so good, then he would be called "The Great One" and not Gretz.
