It doesn't elect the president. So why do we waste our time when our votes can't even make a difference in the presidential candidates we vote in.

I agree to a large extent!! The current system with the electoral college is the unfair one. My vote in Tennessee isn't worth as much as someones vote say in CA, or Tx, or NY. The electoral college was necessary in the beginning days of our republic when neighbors would elect someone trustworthy to ride for days to cast the consensus vote of their area, but we long ago outgrew it. I think popular vote should be the only electoral vote, then everyone's vote counts the same, and the person with the most votes wins..... not the person with the most votes in 4 or 5 states.

In my opinion, it means essentially nothing, especially after December 2000. The electoral college is NOT required to vote for the winner of the popular vote in each state. There might be exceptions to this rule. I believe 4 states have a rule regarding splitting their electoral votes according to the state's popular vote. The other 46 states go with whatever their electors want them to.

What can I say? People love polls. They always want to know whether they're in the majority or not. You're right, it doesn't make much of a difference. Your opinion only counts once every four years, and even then, the popular vote is not what decides it.

Its how we choose the electors who vote in the electoral college, so for now, it does matter.

I agree though, its past time to abolish the Electoral College and elect a president using direct election.

I agree with you and am equally frustrated. I vote in a democratic state, and my state is usually guaranteed to agree with me, so it's frustrating... makes me want to move my vote to Texas so that I really can make a difference with my vote.

The electoral college, usually, tends to vote with how the people want.

It's a weird system, I know.
