On encountering a split in the road Alice asked Rabbit, "Which road should I take?" The Rabbit replied, "That depends a great deal on where you want to go!"

The question of which programming language to learn is alike. There are a broad range of programming languages that have been mentioned and each one serves a specific domain. Languages like C/C++ are used where performance is imporatant, Java is used where platform independence is paramount, Scripting languages like Perl/Python are used where you want to quickly stitch together a set of programs or to do lot of text processing.

So it will be better if you narrow down your domain and then the languages that you might have to learn with automatically come forward with it.

I have been programming computers for over 40 years. Even though it is hardly used anymore I would recommend Basic if you have no programming experience. You can learn it in a few days and It will teach the fundamentals before going into a more complicated language. Languages originally were designed to start at the top and run through the code, branching where appropriate. The newer languages are event driven. Parts of code are executed depending on what is happening, such as a button was pressed.

I agree, HTML is a good place to start. But step back a second and think about your goals. Do you really need to learn any language? What are you trying to accomplish? If you just want to create a Web site, there are tons of canned solutions you can choose from.

Also, Web design can be a complex art form. To start, you may be better off concentrating on developing high quality content and learning the basics of Search Engine Optimization. Then you can expand your coding and visual design skills.

I've learned the basics of various languages over the years, but lately I mainly use PHP. To make my life easier, I use WordPress to set up Web sites and edit the PHP as necessary. Check these out:

www.WordPress.com -- create an account and select from many templates and pluggins. Learn the basics of posting and maintenance without any scripting. Plus it's advertising-free hosting!

www.WordPress.org -- if you are feeling adventurous, get your self a cheap hosting account (www.5dollarhosting.com, www.godaddy.com). Then you configure a MySQL DB and install the WordPress software following their really simple instructions.

Good luck!
