There are never any in our garden, because it's always too stinken' dry or too stinken' wet in the Midwest. Or too cold. But where can I get some as pets (without having them shipped?)

Try a pet store. I believe they are used in aquariums to keep the glass clean.

To answer above: aquarium snails cant be kept out of water because they will die. They are very cool for aquariums though.
