not really
i mean if you really want it, then knock yourself out, but all of these european suv's are gas guzzlers. you'll be lucky if you get 16 mpg
try getting a lexus hybrid suv. those are a bit pricey right now, but they will be worth the investment later. otherwise go with toyota. they have affordable suv hybrids. i think the best one they have is about 35k. saturn has also come out with the cheapest hybrid suv on the market today.

The X5 is a quiet, excellent handling SUV. It performs well with 3.0L 6 cylinder and is very quick with 4.4L V8, but mileage suffers. It drives nice and is very comfortable, but storage behind the second row seats is very limited.

If you are buying new, keep in mind that they introduce a new model next year. If you're looking at used, pay particular attention to the maintenance records and have a qualified mechanic check it out. BMW's are terribly expensive to maintain...parts and labor. $600-$800 is pretty common for dealer service at 30,000 miles.

They are very good cars, but expensive to maintain once the manufacturer warranty expires and there is much stronger competition now than when they were introduced.

Is it a good car? Definitely!

Is it worth the money? Compare it to the competiton and make that decision on your own.

THE ONLY THING GOOD ABOUT A BMW X5 IS THE PROFIT THE SELLING AGENT MAKES WHEN HE SELLS A NEW ONE.
these wannabees aren't even good snow cars with windows that wont go down when up or stay down when cheep string on window regulator breaks all the switches are junk the engine management system is problematic and they suck fuel the way a drunk sucks beer at a 10 kegger, and a badly used Kia sportage will prove to be more reliable. and cheaper to repair, never mind that the front drive axle boots are unprotected and prone to split even if the crab was never used off road also see a lot of rear door speakers and grills broken where little feet have either kicked them or had door close on their small feet this ruins the door panel and isn't particularly good for small feet or shoes either. these are probably reliable enough to get you to the yacht club but hopefully one of your buddies can get you home.

it depends on the reasons why you want an suv.
if you want an suv for real off-roading then i would suggest you buy some other brands - chevy, dodge, fords, japanese. i say this only because that if you are willing to scratch up your $50,000 car in the mud and rocks then, no problem, buy an x5. really, it doesn't hurt so much if a $20,000 to $30,000 suv gets scratched up off-roading. don't get me wrong, because i am a bmw fan. i owned 4 bmws before and test drove the x5. i would have bought it except that i did not think i needed an suv.

buy it if you don't plan on bringing it off-road but want to drive it for the bmw ultimate driving experience (trust me, it is an experience!) and to show off the white and blue badge!

its fast. real fast.
top of the range can accelerate faster than a range rover sport.
handles better than most SUVs(thats y BMW calls it SAV or Sport Activity Vehicle)
and i agree with jay, the comparison with toyota was utterly ridiculous. No toyota(or lexus) can beat a BMW X5 in what the X5 in going fast, especially round a corner
agreed toyotas are cheaper and more economical, but they dont have the advantage of a beemer

BMW is not called the Ultimate Driving Machine for nothing. It is an SUV (SAV) that handles more like a car than anything in it's class, but yet still capable is adverse conditions. And as far as comparing it to a toyota or saturn like the other guy said, he doesn't deserve to drive such a fine automobile.

Sure is! That's why it's a "X5"

That means it's 5 times better than your standard BMW.

Its a good car but there's new model coming next month, and it will be a much impoved version of the current model, with more technology, and safety. You might also want to consider the redesigned Acura MDX. Its getting a lot of high praise.

I LOVE mine....!!....The 8 cylinder (4.4) is FAST, not bad on fuel, handles suprisingly well and will run for a considerably long period of time!! ..(Of course, scheduled maintenance is ESSENTIAL).. The seating is roomy and comfortable, the options are mind-boggling, and it practically drives itself....I vote YES!! If you have not test driven one....do so, your question will be easily answered!! Good Luck!
