No, the source of gravity on the Earth is the Earth's mass, not the moon. If we didn't have the moon the greatest consequence for Earth would be that we would not have tides, which could potentially upset marine life.

The earth's gravity has nothing to do with the moon.

What most people mean when they say gravity, is weight, or the pulling force exerted on an object or person by earth. Weight is only dependent on the mass of the earth, the mass of the object, and the distance (actually, the square of the distance) of the object from the center of the earth.

The moon has its own gravitational pull. But since the moon is very far, and less massive than the earth, it exerts a very small force on objects on the surface of the earth. This force, however, when applied to the earth's oceans, is enough to cause the tides.

Gravity on Earth is caused by the Earth rotating on its own axis. The moon, on the other hand, is attracted to the Earth because of the Earth's gravitational pull. This is why if some astroideds come close enough to the Earth, they are pulled into the Earth, but usually burn up in the Earth atmosphere before they can ever land. What the moon does affect is the tides of water. When the moon is closer to the water, if forces the water to move in or upshore. That is because the moon has it's own gravitational pull, but not as strong as the Earth's gravitational pull. So the answer to your question would be "no, if the moon left the Earths orbit, then there would still be gravity on Earth."

NO, there would still be gravity. Gravity is caused by mass, which the Earth would have the same amount of whether the moon is here or not. If anything, there would be more gravity as the moon would stop pulling people up...

Gravity is property of mass, so the elimination of the Moon does not change the mass of the Earth, hence, there would be no change to the Earth's gravity.


What would change is the ocean's tides, since the distortion of the Earth's crust caused by the Moon's gravity would be eliminated.

The moon actually CAUSES the tides. If there were no moon, we would have no tides. The tides arise due to the pull of the moon's gravity. On the side of Earth nearest the moon, the moon's gravity is the strongest and it pulls up the water slightly (high tide). On the side of Earth furthest from the moon, the moon's gravity is the weakest and the water can move a little away from the moon (which is also high tide). This also affects Earth itself. During high tide Earth rises by an inch or two, not enough for us to notice.

Many of our vocabulary words are "moon oriented." The words "honeymoon" "'lunatic" "moon madness" and "moonflower" would not exist. And try to imagine us without that showy social past-time of "mooning!"

The suns gravity would lways be present .May be , the earth experiences the gravitational forces of the otehr planets also at all times or at specific times when they are specific distances . the strenght of Gravity being varying in indirect proportion tothe quare of the distances between the bodies , the gravitational forces of the other planets should also be felt in varying strengths ,on the earth and vice versa. At any rate , the earth nd all other planets are under the gravitational pull of the Sun all the time. they should be flying at their tangent , the moment that force is abscent. .

gravity would still exist because the earth's gravity does not depend on the moon, but on its core... what would happen if we got rid of the moon would be the tides of the waves...

No the moon has nothing to do with us having gravity. Our gravity just keeps the moon in it's place.
