I usually eat yogurt at the first sign of sores (small bump, tingling, etc). If you get them frequently, you made want to talk to your doctor about a medication call Aphthasol or a compound called Magic Moutwash that contains Benadryl, Maalox and lidocaine.

When I get cold sores I put cut off a piece of lemon and apply it. Burns like crazy but dries the cold sore up quickly and makes it stop hurting. Might work for canker sores too but beware the burning sensation.

A good idea is to swish your mouth with peroxide. Don't swallow but just swish. It will foam up which means its killing germs. That way with the germs being cleaned out then it will heal faster. Contine to swish several times until the sore is healed.
