Kirk Franklin is the best-selling gospel artist in the history of black gospel music. Selling over 13 million units since the release of his first project in 1993, he has been a large part of the new sound, style and look of gospel music. He’s also played an important part in the acceptance of gospel music by mainstream audiences.

Mahalia Jackson. Even though she passed away in 1972, (I think), her records still sell and the majority of Gospel artist copy her style. She did mostly the old hymns that are used in church services. If you really want to check out her work, look at the movie Imitation of Life. She sings at the mother's funeral at the end. Boy will that scene make you cry.
