If what you want to do is a clean install its very simple to do. Be advised however that all of your settings, documents, photos, email etc will be lost. Make sure your bios is set to have your cd/dvd drive at the first boot device. You do this by hitting del (or whatever key combo your system uses) to open the bios set up screen. Find the menu that has to do with boot order and change it to start with CD/DVD drive.

With that done place your windows xp cd or system restore cd in the computer and restart your computer. Follow the directions that appear as it boots to do a clean install (reformat)

PS>>> Doh! I just realized that vds really means cd's. If you don't have any cd's for system restore you may have a computer that has the reinstallation information stored on the computer hard drive. eg. compaq computer hit f10 on system startup to run restore software. (not my favorite option) Like system restore CD's you will have to option to do a destructive (full restore) or a repair restore. Either will most likely work but back up your documents because sometimes **** happens.

If you can Comp restore, go for it. It will reformat the drive for you.

If you dont have any restore or operating system CD's then you are up the creek without a paddle.

You left to many varibles unanswered:
Whats the Op Sys?
Comp type?
etc. etc

Just run it under a cold tap for 10-20mins. That washes all the data off.
