I reformatted my laptop, not realizing that afterward, I would not be able to reinstall the operating system (Win 98) from the CD that I have. After reformatting, it no longer recognizes the CD.
I have obtained a Win 98 boot disk - but it attempts to reinstall the cd driver from the floppy (I also have a similar DOS boot disk). The problem is that the cd-rom can't be connected at the same time as the floppy - so it keeps saying something about no device found. Obviously if the device isn't connected it can't find it. I have tried copying the files from the A: to the C: drive, but the cd driver installer doesn't automatically run when I reboot, and the program that I think controls this says 'bad package' or something like that when I try to run it. How do I get around this?

I looked at BIOS, but don't see anything about booting with CD
Am I missing something?

You're swapping drives on this machine, right? So your CDROM is a peripheral at this point, and not an installed part of your system hardware (like your c:\drive for example).

You've got some troubles, man :) I would recommend this:

Go to a friends computer who still has an a:/ floppy drive. Go out on the web to the manufacturer of your CDROM drive. Download the driver for the CDROM drive to your friend's a: drive.
Take the disk back to your machine and upload the driver from your a: floppy, then switch out the drives and try booting Windows from the CD again.

That's all I can think of... since you're swapping drives, its kind of like asking the computer to print something out prior to installing windows... it has no clue what a printer even is at that point.

If this is all way too much for you, just pay the 50 bucks it would take to have a shop install this for you. I always count on the pros when I'm over my head.

Good luck -

Hmm. Intresting. I hav an idea. Is yur cd rom part of yur boot sequence? You have to go in the bios and change it. U sound like yur boot sequence is yur floppy drive, then yur hard disk. Check in the bios, first topic or 2 for boot sequence and change the boot sequence from Floppy first to CD Rom first. (make sure yur hard disk is 2nd or 3rd if yur floppy is number 1 or 2)Save and restart computer. Make sure yur 98 setup cd is in the drive and it shud boot from th setup CD.

By the way, go with XP Man. If yur computer is slow go with 98 but if irt is fast enough, go with XP. Microsoft has stopped releasing updats for windows 98 In July. Laterz

If you're trying to install an old version of Win98, you need to install DOS first on the hard drive. Your other options are to install a newer version of Win98 which comes with a bootable CD or get WinXP which also is bootable.

And if you do have a bootable CD, then you might need to adjust the BIOS settings to get the system to search the CD-ROM drive for a bootable disk.

Good luck.
