If you're an extreme skier, Chamonix or La Grave.
If you're after scenery, Chamonix
If you want a bit of panache, Megeve or Courchevel 1850
If you want diverse skiing, Courchevel 1850 or Tignes
If you want never-ending miles of properly linked pistes, Courchevel 1850 (probably the best connected big resort in the Trois Vallee - possibly Mottaret is better but not such a well-developed resort)
If you want virtually year round access (not presence, as the other French glaciers close for longer) to snow, Tignes or Les Deux Alpes
If you want to never speak French, Meribel or Val d'Isere
If you want to speak French in a big resort, Les Arcs 1800, Les Menuires, Alpe d'Huez
If you want to avoid crowds, La Clusaz/Le Grand Bornand
If you want apres, go to Austria
Overall I'd have to say the best ski resort in France is Courchevel 1850 - that's why it's so damn expensive.
Footnote: I've seen mention of the PdS below my answer. It isn't a resort. It's a liberally disjointed and low ski area which does indeed lay claim (just!) to having the highest total mileage. Avoriaz (which has been heavily marketed to boarders) is the only decent resort in the whole place, unless you are just going for a midseason weekend, 'cos the PdS while low, is very near Geneva...

relies upon what your point of understanding is and once you desire to pass. in case you're stronger intermediate or an expert skier, I recommend you head for Chamonix, Val d'Isere or Tignes. Tignes is the area early season (November / December) or previous due contained in the season (April / would) because of the glacier snowboarding there. different decrease altitude hotels would possibly no longer have sufficient snow. maximum suitable airport to fly to is in all risk Geneve in Switzerland, it truly is close and there are various flights going there so it truly is going to likely be extra decrease priced. yet why could you pass and ski in France? optimistic, the snowboarding terrain is astounding yet do no longer anticipate every person to be friendly. customer help, on and stale the piste, is undesirable. in case you desire to ski in Europe and value customer help and friendliness, I recommend you head for Austria. St Anton for stronger skiers who like wild apres-ski. Lech in case you have have been given a good number of money. Solden, Mayrhofen, Saalbach, Schladming, Kitzbuhl are additionally great. Or try Switzerland (Wengen, Grindelwald, Saas fee) or Germany (Garmisch-Partenkirchen).

portes du soleil is deffinatly the place to go.
404 miles of trail, 2 countries, 14 villages, over 100 on slope restaurants and its about 64 american dollars per day.
Here's the kicker:
Its the largest ski resort in the world.
Its probably the highest entry on my list of "places to ride"
